Autumn Balance ~ Practical Guidance

Balance with Nature: FINDING HARMONY IN AUTUMN

The growing season has come to a close. Nature begins its graceful retreat — drawing energy inward, back to its roots. Leaves crisp + fall, seeds return to nourish the soil, and wildlife slows down to prepare for the stillness ahead. The air feels cooler, damper, almost metallic + sunlight softens — casting a softer glow that changes how we see the world.

Nature, in this moment, is slowing down and letting go.
It’s withdrawing + simplifying, preparing for rest + renewal. We can learn from this rhythm — to mirror these natural patterns in our own lives, behaviours + wellbeing ~ we can restore balance in our own bodies, minds + relationships..

AUTUMN THEMES from Nature:

Slow Down

Be discerning with your energy. Turn inward to strengthen your roots — your connections, values + integrity. Create healthy boundaries to protect how your energy is spent. Choose movement + exercise that invigorate + focus rather than deplete — think low-intensity practices that build resilience + clarity.

MAKE SPACE

Simplify your environment + your mind.
Declutter your cupboards, inboxes, wardrobes + your emotional space. Let go of what no longer serves you: old grudges, unhelpful habits, unfinished projects. This is a season of discernment + wisdom – ask yourself: What truly matters? What is of value to keep? And what is the value of letting go ~ what can I release to create space for renewal?

PROTECT

Support your body’s natural defences. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Lungs + Large Intestine are the organs of Autumn — your first lines of defence against the external world. Focus on gut health, lung function + lymphatic flow to support hydration, detoxification + immunity. Nourish your microbiome, practice breathwork + strengthen these systems that keep you balanced.

Practical Guidance for Autumn Balance:

Draw inspiration from Nature + Eastern wisdom to stay grounded, resilient + well during this changeable season.

ROUTINE + RHYTHM

Keep a regular daily rhythm — with consistent sleep, waking, meals + movement. Routine cultivates stability, strengthens immunity + enhances self-worth.

BREATHE WELL

Be a nose breather. Practice pranayama (breathwork) + gentle movements to open the chest, shoulders + lungs — improving thoracic mobility + nervous system balance. Try:

  • Three-part breathing
  • Alternate nostril breathing
  • Square breathing
  • Bhastrika (Bellows Breath)

CALM + FOCUS

Meditation, mindful walking + quiet reflection ground us in the present. These practices help refine our responses, clarify our thinking + reduce reactivity — much like the crisp clarity of autumn air.

SUPPORT DIGESTION + IMMUNITY

Eat with the season: root vegetables, squashes, winter greens, quality proteins + warming soups or stews.
Favour cooked, nourishing meals over cold or raw foods.
Sip on herbal infusions — ginger, lemon, or warming tisanes.
Remember:

  • Two-thirds of your immune system lives in your gut.
  • 95% of your serotonin (“feel-good” hormone) is produced there.
  • The gut is often referred to as the ‘second brain’ due to its links to emotional + cognitive centres of the brain (via the Gut-Brain Axis).
  • There are increasingly more studies suggesting that overall health + resilience is impossible without a healthy balanced gut microbiome.

A healthy gut supports not just your immunity, but your mood, focus + resilience.

To cultivate a thriving gut microbiome eat a variety of vegetables, fibre-rich foods + natural probiotics like kefir, kombucha, kimchi, miso, sauerkraut + yoghurt (fermented foods)

SUPPORT SKIN + LYMPH HEALTH

Nourish your skin with warm oil self-massage 2–3 times a week — ideally before a bath or bedtime. Choose hydrating, natural oils to counter seasonal dryness.
Wear breathable, cosy layers that allow circulation + warmth. Avoid tight clothing.

Boost lymph flow with a practice of diaphragmatic breathing. Also gentle tapping, or dry brushing, especially around these key lymphatic areas to move the lymph fluids just beneath the skin:

  • Collarbone, neck + chest
  • Face, jaw + behind ears
  • Armpits
  • Stomach region
  • Groins
  • Back of knees
  • Return to collarbone

AUTUMN YOGA + QIGONG

Focus on grounding, warmth + gentle strength while relieving tension in the upper body + enhancing breathing capabilities.

  • Coordinate movement with breath.
  • Slow down your flow — favour longer holds + mindful transitions.
  • Strengthen + stabilise the lower body: back, hips + legs.
  • Add arm + shoulder variations to release upper body tension.
  • Incorporate gentle twists + chest openers for better lung expansion.
  • Include calming breathwork to regulate your nervous system.

REFINE + REFRAME

Autumn invites introspection. Reflect on your motives, habits + values.
Keep a journal, revisit intentions + refine your focus.
Cultivate honesty — with yourself + others — and stay aligned with your true integrity. This season, allow yourself to evolve.

Autumn Yoga Classes are running through to mid- December in Bourg St Maurice. See the class schedule HERE
